Extractions When a tooth cannot be restored because of decay or fracture or when periodontal disease is involved, an extraction may be necessary. Retained primary(baby) teeth sometimes require extraction to make room for erupting permanent teeth. Most extractions can be performed by a general dentist, but there are instances where a patient will be referred to an oral surgeon. Before removing a tooth, your dentist will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area. After the tooth is removed, you may need stitches. Some stitches dissolve over time and some have to be removed after a few days. Your dentist will tell you whether your stitches need to be removed. A folded cotton gauze pad placed over the wound will help stop the bleeding. If needed, an antibiotic and/or pain releiver is prescribed. |
